Happy New Year to all of you! Here's a year worth of snapshots from this bodymind's perspective. Looking forward to a very promising 2007.

I'm still figuring out why Starbucks is not yet providing free wi-fi access when virtually all of its competitors already are. For example, Tully's Coffee is already providing free wi-fi to most of its location. Why? As a service to customers:
“It's pretty simple,” Tully's President John Dresel said. “We will not be charging the customer. … This is about our customers. The more we give them, the better and solid the relationship is between our company and our customers.” (via SeattlePi)
So how come Starbucks continues to charge for its wifi access via T-Mobile hotspots? I have not idea. But here are my guesses:
– Starbucks is too focused on its Hear Music facelift.
– Starbucks is profitable already anyway that they don't need to woo more customers with free wi-fi. And besides, it would probably slow down the turnover of customers because some wireless enabled people will stay longer in Starbucks stores without buying more coffee.
– Starbucks is tied down with T-Mobile Hotspot contract.
– Starbucks has too many locations that it would be very expensive to wifi-enable all of them for free.
– Starbucks would rather look good than do good.
So what do you think? You have any better answers? Help me out here.
In the meantime, it's good that we've got tons of coffee shops with free wifi here in Seattle.
WOOT! I think I'll hangout more often at Tully's now…
The session begins…. I'll be posting real-time blog updates on zBlog:~C4Chaos so please check the updates there, or feed from tag = BBS2006. Also check out ~my Flickr stream: tag = BBS2006.
I love it when fortune cookies tell me what I want to hear.
Speaking of (Product) RED… I snapped this photo as I was passing by… Then pocket karma hit me instantly.

“There
is a lot of focus on TV, in magazines…about being skinny and rich. I
don’t think those are that important. It’s much more important for us
to be good, honest people that try to help others and live the best
life we can. That’s where you get your satisfaction ultimately.”

I have a couple of good friends whose moms died of breast cancer. They are volunteers for an organization called Expedition Inspiration –
The
purpose of The Expedition Inspiration Fund for Breast Cancer Research
is to raise awareness and monies to benefit breast cancer research
through research project funding, public education, and patient support.
Yesterday was Expedition Inspiration's Seattle Take-A-Hike Bike or Roll day. So I joined my friends and volunteered to help out with the setup committee and also took photos for the event. I enjoyed meeting a lot of new people. There were a lot of cancer survivors too.
There was this jolly elderly woman who was manning the booth for breast cancer as well as ovarian cancer awareness. She saw me taking photos and she approached me –
“Hi, let me put this ribbon on you.”
“Oh, thanks.”
She fastened the pink ribbon on my t-shirt with a big smile on her face.
“There. That's a chick magnet you know.”
“Really? Can you pin me up some more?”
“Here's a bracelet too.” Her big smile never wavered.
Later on I overheard that the woman is a breast cancer survivor, nine months and counting, and going strong. I felt honored.
My favorite part of the event was not the hike, but the raising of the tribute flags – adopted from a Tibetan tradition, where people had written the names of their family and friends who have battled cancer.
Check out the Expedition Inspiration 2006 Photo Set. I dedicate this to all people who have been affected by cancer, one way or the other.

This week's feature on sharma.zaadz.com prompted me to reflect on impermanence. “I
have a confession to make: for some reason, I've been reading
obituaries on a regular basis these days. Not sure why. I guess, like
most human beings, as we get to the half-time point of our lives, we
connect to our mortality and realize that - no matter how long we live
- our days are numbered. You might think that connecting to the fact
that one day you will die is a depressing thing to consider. To me it's
just the opposite - connecting to my mortality breathes more life into
my days. It energizes me. It makes me want to give my best, seize every
opportunity that crosses my path and stand for something higher. “What
I want to encourage you to consider, more than anything else, over the
next 30 days is this: “what will be your legacy?” What will be the
footprint that you will leave behind to show the generations who will
follow you that you have walked the planet? What will be your mark?” I have a hobby of reading obituaries too. In fact, I even blog some of them.
Depending on my mood, it could really get depressing at times, or
enlightening on some days. But in general, it constantly reminds me of
my own mortality and my own idea of purpose and meaning. If people ask me what's the purpose of life, I'll just say that it's all about the four Ls – living, loving, learning, leaving a legacy.
As of this writing, I have two answers:
Cyberspace: The paths of hyperlinks that I'll be weaving overtime. No matter how ephemeral those links and web pages are, I see them as golden threads of expression of my interiority, similar to how a painter would look at her artwork.
Meatspace: The Ethic of Reciprocity that I will extend to everyone I will meet in this lifetime; my family, and specially my (yet to be born) children.
So, what will be your legacy?

I have a big backlog of photos (make that hundreds of photos) I've taken here in Ireland that I still haven't uploaded to Flickr yet. I finally had time this morning to work on some of the photos. Here they are. More photos to come…
